An alder is any tree or shrub of the birch
family Betulaceae, found mainly in cooler
parts of the northern hemisphere and
characterized by toothed leaves and catkins.
Alnus glutinosa is allied to the birch and is
found in wet habitats in Europe and North
Asia. About 30 species of alder occur in the
northern hemisphere and South America.
